Here is a wonderful read. 'Healing
The Addicted Brain' by Harold C. Urschel, III, M.D. is well written, understandably
readable, and cutting edge current. It is right in line with the
HBO special 'Addiction' offered as a link on this site.
Now we have great books, concerned authors, fabulous documentaries, medical
and therapeutic tools, you, and me to get the message out and help.
All that is needed now is governments to fund like they mean it.

'Healing The Addicted Brain' by Harold C. Urschel, III, M.D.
If you have been wondering what changes have been made in the treatment
of substance addiction over the last 10 years, want to know what your doctor
can do to help you or a loved one with a substance addiction issue, believe
that AA & NA are the only places you can go to get help without spending
$40,000 at a beach side resort/clinic, then this is the book for you.
Dr. Urschel is not anti-AA & NA, nor is he against the use of what
he calls ‘talking therapy’ that is provided by psychologists and counsellors
in most clinics and rehabs. He makes a rock-hard case for the need
to use both medical tools and ‘talking therapy’ to safely and successfully
deal with addiction issues.
Here is an excerpt from Dr. Urschel’s book that will give you a feel for
his writer’s voice and professional opinion: “Fortunately, recent scientific
research has discovered new avenues of treatment by showing conclusively
that addiction is a chronic physical disease that attacks the brain, damaging
key parts of the cerebral cortex and limbic system. This brain damage cannot
be reversed by talking therapies; only select new medications and continued
sobriety can do that. But when used together, these new medicines and talking
therapies can literally work wonders.”
Information regarding medications that help people deal with Post Acute
Withdrawal symptoms, desires and cravings, and the risk of relapse are
described and explained in this book. After reading it, you will
be able to advocate more effectively for yourself, or others.
